About FLA

The objective of the FLA is to bring together individuals within the Calgary library community to share and promote the concerns of the library and information professions.

Vision

FLA supports its members in being active, engaged and knowledgeable information professionals, through professional development and networking opportunities.

Values

FLA will offer a mix of social and professional development centered events for its members

  • FLA will offer Jobline to enable up-to-date-access to industry postings
  • FLA will offer FLA Gazette to keep members up to date on local activities and trends
  • FLA will primarily look to its membership as sources of expertise for professional development
  • Where feasible, FLA will seek partnerships with other groups in order to broaden professional development offerings
  • FLA will utilize its communication channels (such as the Gazette) and its events to explore structured questions relating to challenges and trends in the information professions
  • FLA will welcome non-members and those from outside of the library and information professions to attend professional development programming

FLA Executive 2022-2023

PRESIDENT: Sean Anderson flapresident@fla.org

Sean is currently enrolled in the Library Information Technology program at SAIT after spending far too long working in the food and beverage industry. Sean’s career path has taken him to Palm Springs and back, through resorts and a plethora of coffee establishments. He is always happy to talk coffee and food. Sean’s hobbies include reading, writing, exercise, a variety of sports, photography, music, and relaxing with his partner.

VICE-PRESIDENT: Taylor McGovern flavp@fla.org

Taylor is currently a Records Analyst with TC Energy. Prior to this, she was a Learning Support Teacher and Elementary Generalist with Rocky View Schools. Taylor holds a BSc and BEd from the University of Lethbridge, and a diploma in Library Information Technology from SAIT. Her hobby includes finding hobbies to do now that her evenings and weekends are free (it is not going well).

SECRETARY: Bronte Burnette-Chian secretary@fla.org

Bronte is the Digital Literacy Librarian at the University of Calgary, and liaison librarian for Chemistry, Geosciences, Physics & Astronomy, and Mathematics & Statistics. Prior to her position at the University of Calgary, she worked for the Indigenous Initiatives team and Xwi7xwa Library at the University of British Columbia (UBC) on unceded Musqueam Territory. She enjoys the outdoors with her family, romance novels, and is learning how to ice-skate.

TREASURER: Donna Campbell treasurer@fla.org

Donna is currently teaching in the Library Technicians program at SAIT. Donna’s education includes degrees in computing science, library science, an MBA and a doctorate in Higher Education. She has worked in academic, government and special libraries, and is Past President of the Alberta Library Trustees Association. Her spare time is spent catering to the whims of her rescue cats, travelling when she can get away, and keeping up with her Book Club readings. She looks forward to contributing to FLA and meeting new members.

Diana is currently in her second year of the Library Information Technology program at SAIT. Her credentials include degrees in both Psychology and Education (specializing in Early Childhood Education) from the University of Calgary. In her free time, she enjoys hiking with her husband, gardening, pottery and learning to play the harp.

JOBLINE: Danny DeCastro jobline@fla.org

Danny is currently teaching in the Library Technician program at SAIT. Previously, he worked in records and information management, corporate, government, and post-secondary libraries. Danny holds a MEd in Adult and Workplace Learning from the University of Calgary, and a Master of Library and Information Studies degree from the University of Alberta.

Heather is an instructor in the Library Information Technology program at SAIT. She has worked in public, special, academic, law and libraries. She enjoys hanging out with her dog, reading and pub trivia. Heather has a LIT Diploma from SAIT, a BA from University of Calgary, and MLIS and Law degrees from Dalhousie University.

PAST-PRESIDENT: Carla Lewis pastpresident@fla.org

Carla is the Learning Support Librarian and Learning Commons Manager at the Taylor Family Digital Library at the University of Calgary. Previously, she worked at the University of Alberta Libraries as a Teaching and Learning Librarian. Carla holds a BEd in Secondary Education, and a diploma in Library and Information Technology.

FLA CONNECTS: James Murphy flaconnects@fla.org

James is the Student Learning and Engagement Librarian at the Taylor Family Digital Library, University of Calgary, and also liaison librarian to art, art history, architecture, planning and landscape. He has worked in libraries in both Alberta and British Columbia, and received his MLIS in 2016 from the University of British Columbia. In his spare time James likes enjoying outdoor activities like hiking, biking, snowboarding and camping.
