The Alberta Library (TAL) Board is seeking an experienced professional with proven leadership skills and experience in critical functions associated with leading a complex organization. The CEO must work effectively with and take direction from the Board of Directors. On a day-to-day basis, the CEO manages, leads, and develops TAL employees and coordinates the operations of the organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and implementation of an annual budget, financial reporting and oversight, and development and implementation of services aligned with TAL’s strategic directions. This position is based in Edmonton.

In 1997, libraries in Alberta created The Alberta Library – a not-for-profit corporation to address challenges and opportunities created by a changing information, economic and political environment. TAL continues to serve more than 300 libraries of all types working together to ensure the best possible service for library users. Members collaborate to take advantage of discounted purchasing, sharing resources and seeking new opportunities for reducing duplication and providing equitable access to information for communities in Alberta.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the Board in making informed decisions
  • Co-ordinating and leading all TAL staff and operations at its Edmonton office.
  • Interacting with the community on behalf of TAL.
  • Maintaining TAL’s reputation both provincially and nationally.
  • Entrepreneurial approach to new opportunities for TAL services to its members.
  • Contributing as a team member to the accomplishment of TAL’s goals.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will hold an MLIS from an ALA accredited program, or an equivalent combination of education and library experience.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills or knowledge in the following areas:

  • General management skills including risk management.
  • Financial literacy and ability to report financial information appropriately for different audiences.
  • The full range of human resource management activities.
  • Critical thinking, problem solving, integrity, and emotional intelligence.
  • Working with a board.
  • Working knowledge of trends in library and information technology.
  • Understanding of the Alberta library landscape.
