The Student Services department’s role in student success is to create a culture and environment that unleashes the full potential of all the students at SAIT. The Opportunity
Reporting to the User Services Coordinator, Library Casual Staff are members of the Reg Erhardt Library’s User Services Team, focused on providing frontline library and information services to students, staff, faculty and visitors to SAIT, consistent with the Library’s policies. They provide library circulation, basic reference and user assistance to patrons in-person, by phone, email or online chat.
Casual staff are expected to make decisions independently, balancing operational needs with user-focused service. They are also comfortable working in a public space serving a diverse community of library users, during hours when they may have limited support from specialist library staff or other SAIT departments. Casual staff will meet a variety of public service situations with competence and empathy.
Please note: Successful applicants will work assigned part-time hours, usually covering weekday evenings and weekends. However, they may also be expected to cover additional shifts on short notice or during weekdays to support the Library’s business needs.
The Role
- Respond to reference queries, clarifying user needs through reference interviews
- Guide users through in the use of information tools, such Library Search and e-Resources
- Provide circulation and client account services using our ILS
- Provide basic technical assistance to users
- Inform users about library resources, policies and processes
- Direct users to appropriate SAIT services and resources
- Open and close the Library
- Refer complex user requests to appropriate staff
- Oversee the work of shelvers and report issues to the User Services Coordinator
- Prepare print material for shelving
- Track usage statistics
- Maintain equipment
- Organize collections
- Re-shelve returned materials
Qualifications & Experience
- Library Technician Diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Extensive knowledge of contemporary reference and information sources
- Strong knowledge of library operations and best practices
- Familiarity with modern ILS systems
- Basic computer skills, including use of the Windows operating system and Office 365
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently, but cooperatively
- Ability to resolve problems and make decisions independently
- Ability to meet a variety of users and needs with competence and empathy
Job classification: Library Technician I
Hourly rate: $22.84 – $24.67
